Inside Megan Jorgenson’s Dreamy LA Studio
“Painting is a reminder of my spirit, a measure in which I know myself.”
Like Action painters before her — Franz Kline and Helen Frankenthaler among them — Los Angeles-based artist Megan Jorgenson creates work that gives way to her process. Each painting’s life cycle, from beginning to end, is exposed to the viewer in the dabs, swooshes, and strokes which render it unique: The transparency of its creation is an integral part of its story.
What separates Jorgenson’s work, however, is just as integral: Its direct connection to nature. Yes, her dreamy, abstracted compositions and their organic color palettes immediately remind the viewer of earth’s wonders, such as desert sunsets, rugged terrain, or fields of flowers, but she goes further than that. Natural elements including rocks, petals, and clay are frequently used as materials, which makes her painting process even more spiritual, more meditative, and more rooted in her natural surroundings.
That said, to observe Jorgenson’s painting practice is to understand her works on a deeper level, which is why we asked to take a look inside her LA work space as she crushed materials, mixed colors, and brought to life her shapes and forms in an intuitive dance. And the artist, who welcomes commissions and sells original pieces through her website, was gracious enough to give us a behind-the-scenes peek of it all.
