The Advice Lisa Bühler Wants To Give Small Businesses
“I like to step into the mind of someone else to find new perspective.”
Before founded her SF-based online boutique Lisa Says Gah, Lisa Bühler had already cut her teeth in the fashion world, having worked as a buyer and account executive. With her own venture, however, she got to focus on her passion: Highlighting independent and ethical brands — which now includes her own locally-made, influencer-loved in-house label. Ahead she shares some inspiration and advice for fellow creatives and entrepreneurs.
What was the Lightbulb Moment that inspired you to fully dive into what you do?
I set out to create an anti-shop kind of shop — a space where independent design and artistry could thrive, where diversity and discovery are sewn into the deadstock fabric. It was a space I craved but couldn't find. And that became the impetus to launching Lisa Says Gah.
What’s the most unexpected thing you’ve learned in your current career?
Work with what you've got to get to where you're going. I've been able to grow the business gradually by not getting too ahead of myself. This is important for self-funded businesses, and possibly something VC-backed brands need a little more of — reasonable, responsible growth.
What often sparks your creativity or gets you into the creative zone?
Reading and watching. Old movies, fiction and non-fiction books. I like to step into the mind of someone else to find new perspective.
What is your unfiltered advice for anyone looking to break into your industry?
Work for a company you admire.
